Serhat Aslan graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at Ege University and then completed his doctorate in Periodontology at the Ege University Institute of Health Sciences with his thesis titled "Evaluation of the Effect of the Position of Collagen Membranes Used with Bone Grafts on New Bone Formation in Buccal Dehiscence Defects Occurring During Implant Surgery."
He works as a Periodontology Specialist at his clinic located in Alsancak, İzmir. He is a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical, Surgical, and Dental Sciences at the University of Milan (Italy) and a visiting faculty member in the Department of Periodontology and Oral Microbiology at KU Leuven University (Belgium). He has contributed to the field of regenerative periodontal surgery by defining the entire papilla preservation technique. He has been a guest speaker at national and international conferences and has received scientific and presentation awards.
Dr. Aslan serves as the Secretary-General of the Turkish Periodontology Association Board and as a delegate to the European Federation of Periodontology. Dr. Aslan is a member of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdP), the International Team for Implantology (ITI), 1 and the Aesthetic Dentistry Academy (EDAD). Focusing on the effects of regenerative biomaterials and various surgical techniques on soft and hard tissues and their clinical outcomes, Dr. Aslan conducts both single-center and multicenter clinical studies in the field of periodontology.
Digital dentistry utilizes computer-aided impression taking and immediate milling systems to rapidly and efficiently replace missing tooth structure with prosthetic restorations.
Titanium implants placed in the jawbone to complete missing teeth preserve the structural integrity of adjacent teeth. The important points to be considered in this treatment are having a gum tissue similar to that around natural teeth, having a jawbone of sufficient size surrounding the implant, and applying suitable prosthetics that do not damage the gum.
Microsurgical procedures rely on the principles of using appropriate magnification systems (surgical microscope or loupe), illumination, and smaller instruments, which directly impact the success of regenerative surgical procedures. Their effectiveness has been scientifically proven, and they are considered the gold standard today.
Treating gum disease, which affects a large segment of the population, requires the full cooperation of both the patient and the doctor. Bleeding gums are the first sign of the disease, although this symptom may be less noticeable in smokers. The most important step in treatment is to establish and maintain patient-specific oral hygiene habits and to elevate oral hygiene to the highest level.
Gum disease is a treatable condition. Based on scientific studies, both surgical and non-surgical treatment methods can be applied to restore gum health.
Healthy gums never bleed. Bleeding is the most significant sign of gum disease. Individuals with gum disease may not be aware of the need for treatment, as they often do not experience pain. During a periodontal examination, the severity of bone loss around the teeth is measured in millimeters, and treatment options are discussed.
One of the common problems encountered in dental implant procedures today is peri-implant disease. It is divided into peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Mucositis involves inflammation of the gum tissue around the implant, while implantitis involves inflammation of both the gum and the bone.
Considering all this information, it can be said that the primary goal of a periodontist is to achieve sustainable oral and overall health.
